Michael Grothusen is a Philadelphia sculptor whose work is rooted in architecture, memory and experience. As part of the Michener’s Outdoor Sculpture Program, Grothusen exhibited his large-scale sculpture Life’s Joys—Life’s Disappointments.Influence for this work comes from looking at commemorative vessels of all types—sports trophies, urns, fountains and other forms of public monuments or memorials. Through changes in scale, material and patterning this work goes beyond these initial references and asks questions about the similarity of the vessels and their relationship to our everyday lives.
