The Ann Silverman Volunteer and Docent of the Year Awards

  • 2014 Volunteer Award Recipients.

Volunteers have been an integral part of the Michener Art Museum since its inception in 1988. They continue to be a vital force in the fulfillment of the Museum’s mission. When the Museum opened, there were three volunteers. Two years later, the first docent-training program began. Today, there are more than 150 volunteers, docents and junior volunteers who give more than 12,000 hours of service each year.

In recognition of this strong partnership, Mari Sabusawa Michener established the Mari Michener Docent of the Year Award and the Ann Silverman Volunteer of the Year Award in 1992. The two awards were created to, “honor one volunteer and one docent each year who had been exemplary in their efforts to keep the Museum moving forward.”

At the first award ceremony in December 1992, Mari stated, “It is you that keeps this Museum alive. You give of your valuable time and enthusiasm and it is appreciated.” Mary Ellen Cronin was the first docent recipient and Evelyn Fairstone was the first volunteer recipient. When Mari passed away in 1994, Ann Silverman became the Michener Volunteer and Docent Award benefactor. Subsequently, both Docent and Volunteer of the Year Awards were named for her. Melissa Welcker was the first to receive the Junior Volunteer of the Year, a non-monetary award, when it was first established in 1994.

Between 1994 and 2007, Ann attended the ceremonies and presented each volunteer with a monetary award. She was an active supporter of the Michener volunteers and their efforts. After her death in 2007, her husband Herman Silverman, chairman emeritus and one of the Museum’s founders, and their daughters, established an endowment fund to carry on the awards tradition in her honor. A member of the Silverman family continues to attend the event and present awards in all three categories. The annual awards are both an honor for those who dedicate their time to the Museum and a reminder of the critical role volunteers and docents play at the James A. Michener Art Museum.
