Modernist and Contemporary Expressions

  • Diane Burko (b. 1945), Vulcano From the Air, 2001, oil on canvas, H. 60 x W. 84 inches, James A. Michener Art Museum. Gift of Jane Biberman.

Modernist and Contemporary Expressions highlights the museum’s increased focus on building its collections of modern and contemporary art. Included in the show are a number of artists who have rejected traditional techniques of copying form, texture, color and space as mirrored in visual reality in order to express their inner experience and subjective responses to the objects and events around them. Others, less concerned with the universal aspects of man’s inner life, employ figurative and naturalistic styles to create alternative worlds or dreamlike scenes or to imbue man and nature with diffused presences as they explore the complexities of identity, the structure of time, and the psychic dimensions of a place. The exhibition illustrates the rich diversity of expression that results as modernist and contemporary artists grapple with creating new modes of representation and new ways of expressing their responses to the world around them.
