Featuring eighty-six photographs, from the Condé Nast archives, Charles Sheeler: Fashion, Photography, and Sculptural Form casts a new light on one of America’s best-known modernists.
Between 1926 and 1931, Charles Sheeler worked as a photographer for Condé Nast, creating fashion images and portraits for Vanity Fair and Vogue. This remarkable body of work has not been seen by the public in nearly ninety years. Comprising photographs and paintings by Sheeler along with fashions of the era, Charles Sheeler: Fashion, Photography and Sculptural Form evokes the personalities, glamour, and promise of the Jazz Age, and reveals for the first time how Sheeler’s “day job” at Condé Nast shaped his aesthetic vision and artistic career.
"In mounting this show, [curator] Jensen sought to create an experience — to lead visitors down imagined New York City streets, in which movie stars are trailing down steps or pausing in their sequin dresses, or going out on the town in their velvet and ermine. Jensen’s commitment to creating a lasting experience in a temporary exhibition is inspiring, uplifting, a standard to which any artist should aspire."
“[An] elegantly produced show”
“Dismissed for a long time as work that a painter did as a day job, Sheeler’s Condé Nast photography…has been cast in a dramatically elegant new light.”
--Ticket to Entertainment
“[This exhibition] is a dramatic, multimedia display that not only celebrates a major artist's little-known body of work, but also immerses viewers in the shapes and forms of the age that inspired him.”
--The Morning Call
“The fashion vignettes…put one in a mood to dress up and lounge glamorously around a nightclub.”
--Bucks County Courier-Times
“…[Curator] Jensen makes an effective case that these photos reveal evidence of Sheeler’s approach to linear and sculptural form that would appear in artistic images and paintings he would come to produce throughout his career.”
