“The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create.”
- President Barack Obama
Central Bucks High School West is fortunate to have a great amount of support for and dedication to the arts. Two years ago, we joined the National Art Honor Society (NAHS), an organization designed specifically for high school students in grades 9-12. In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the National Art Honor Society program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. The NAHS strives to aid members in attaining the highest standards in art scholarship, character, service, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.
The CB West National Art Honor Society is comprised of a select group of talented artists who thrive in both the arts and academia. To be a member of the NAHS, students must submit an essay, maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, earn an A- or higher in all art classes, and have taken a minimum of 2.0 credits of art. Our chapter is 40 members strong, comprised of 11th and 12th graders. We demonstrate a continuing desire to volunteer in our community, and have a strong passion for the arts. Over the last two years, the NAHS at CB West has made some amazing strides, all of which are celebrated in this exhibition.
Our mission is to work together to build an artistic community of excellence and service to others. Our NAHS chapter President, Emily Omesi, was a former scholarship recipient at the Michener Art Museum summer program. Her love of Michener art classes and appreciation for the scholarship opportunities she received over the years inspired her to organize a scholarship fundraiser for the museum. This exhibition grew out of Emily’s collaboration with the Michener Department of Arts Education and her school’s photography program.
Additional activities this year include adopting an elementary art classroom in Philadelphia and raising money to supply their classroom with art materials, hosting a student art sale at CB West, partnering with a 2nd grade elementary class through “Art Pen Pals”, working on the backdrop and props for the school Developmental Music class play, photographing community events in Doylestown, painting faces at a local elementary school’s May Fair, participating in the CB Cares Pumpkinfest, making Valentine’s cards for a nursing home, volunteering at the YMCA to make crafts with kids, and much more. Our chapter is run by student-elected officers and has truly set the tone for an environment of collaboration and support of the arts in our school and community.
The Michener is thrilled to celebrate the artistic achievements of the Central Bucks High School West National Art Honor Society in this exhibition.
