Charlotte Blake Alston: All Together Now
Martin Luther King Day of Service and Art
Sunday 1PM - 3PM
Charlotte Blake Alston breathes life into traditional and contemporary stories from African and African American oral and cultural traditions. These traditional tales and songs are the foundation upon which many of today’s African American storytellers stand. The stories continue to strengthen, sustain, and bind a community with a shared American experience. That human experience is woven into the larger story that is the common, shared history of all Americans. Her solo performances are often enhanced with traditional instruments such as djembe, mbira, shekere or the 21-stringed kora.
Join us for an engaging hour of stories as we welcome Charlotte back to the Michener. Make your mark on the world during our annual Martin Luther King Day of Service and Art by creating an All Together Now hexagon using a variety of art materials in our Education Center, following the performance.
Finished hexagons created in the interactive exhibition and during the Day of Service and Art will be displayed in the Michener Education Gallery in January, and at the Interdependence Convention at The Marketplace Steamtown in Scranton, PA, in September 2018; artwork images may also be posted on Artsonia. All hexagons will be returned to participants at the end of the program.
The Martin Luther King Day of Service and Art is sponsored by the Leff Family Foundation.
Programming in the Education Gallery is made possible by the lead sponsorship of Penn Community Bank. Additional sponsorship is provided by the Doris Weiss Education Gallery Endowment and FACT Bucks County, with in-kind support from Morrie Breyer & Michael Mamp.
Thank you for your interest in Michener Art Museum programs, events, music, and art classes for all ages!
