Students learn new drawing and painting skills and explore a variety of art materials including pencil, charcoal, oil and chalk pastels, acrylic paint on canvas, and watercolors. Students will add some layered mixed media, photographs, and collage materials to their artwork. They will also work out of doors at easels when weather permits. Individualized instruction and focused art projects enhance observation and imagination, foster the development of new talents, provide opportunities for self-expression, and build the evolution of a personal style.
All of our students explore the Michener galleries weekly, and use works in the exhibitions as take-off points for their own art making. They also work from photographs, observation, and imagination, and glean inspiration from famous artists throughout history.
Michener classes keep Art at the Heart of Education with individualized attention, small classes, frequent gallery tours, and master teachers as hallmarks of the exceptional arts programs. Through exposure to a variety of art forms and art materials, all courses encourage the development of new skills and build confidence in creative expression. The Michener’s permanent collections balanced with changing exhibitions provide ongoing opportunities for looking at and learning about a variety of art forms in new ways. Student work is exhibited in the Education Gallery throughout the year.Faculty member Autumn Dow
