Instructor: Maria Wible

Students learn new drawing and painting skills, explore a variety of art materials, and visit Michener galleries weekly in our Explore Art series. Individualized instruction and inspiring art lessons enhance observation and imagination, foster the development of new talents, provide opportunities for self-expression, build confidence, stimulate creativity, and encourage the evolution of a personal style. Students explore Michener galleries weekly, and use works in the exhibitions as take-off points for their own art making; they also work from photographs, observation, and imagination. Students will use pencil, charcoal, oil and chalk pastels, acrylic paint on canvas, watercolors, and an array of printmaking and collage materials in this program. Student artwork is exhibited in the Art in Bloom Education Gallery exhibition in April.

Projects are not repeated throughout the year. Most students attend for consecutive seasons, and many attend for several years.

Individualized attention, small classes, frequent gallery tours, and master teachers are hallmarks of the Michener Art Museum’s exceptional arts programs. Through exposure to a variety of art forms and art materials, all courses encourage the development of new skills and build confidence in creative expression. The Michener’s permanent collections balanced with changing exhibitions provide ongoing opportunities for looking at and learning about a variety of art forms in new ways. Student work is exhibited in the Education Gallery throughout the year. All art classes at the Michener keep art at the heart of education.

Faculty member Maria Wible has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Penn State University, and is working toward her Master’s Degree in Art Education from University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She is currently the elementary art teacher at First Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School. Maria joined the adjunct staff at the Michener in 2015.
