The United States is an amazing country, where people from all over the world have settled, where cultures gather and honor unity and diversity. Some people call this “The American Mosaic.” In this program, students will join an in-depth artistic exploration of their own country. They will learn how art, music and theater here can be traced to many different countries and many different events, making connections that are exciting and inspiring. Imagine childhood party games from Europe, which became a popular way to socialize in the 1900’s, and slave songs from Africa, which influenced Jazz and Blues in the 20’s. Times of turmoil also inspired artists like Joan Baez and Pete Seeger in the 50’s and 60’s. Create drawings, paintings, sculpture, pottery, textile arts, jewelry, and more. Sing, dance, and perform – and celebrate the United States! All are invited to a performance and exhibition in Michener’s event pavilion on the last day of camp.
The Michener Art Museum offers the only art classes in Bucks County where learners of all ages experience Museum exhibitions as an ongoing part of their arts education. Discussions and experiences in the galleries and sculpture garden inspire students to create original works of art in response to what they see. Individualized attention, small classes, and master teachers are hallmarks of exceptional programs that combine learning new skills with opportunities for creative expression and the development of a personal style. Students work in an environment rooted in inspired and supportive instruction, meaningful gallery experiences, personal observation, and imagination. Student work is exhibited in the Education Gallery throughout the year. All art classes at the Michener keep art at the heart of education.
Faculty member Stephani Thomas holds a BS in Art Education from Millersville University an MS in Art Education from Arcadia University. She is a National Board Certified Art Teacher and was the Bucks County Teacher of the Year in 2015. She has been with the Michener since 1999. One parent noted, “Stephani is a rare teacher who gives endless time and attention to cultivating every child’s interests in and gifts for art.”
