Instructor: Ashley Rutherford

Participants will learn to create original landscape and still life drawings using pen, ink, and sumi-e brushes in this workshop designed to inspire and challenge artists of all levels and abilities. Become comfortable with the medium and materials through some discovery exercises, and create a complete artwork by the end of the session. This workshop will encourage adult artists of all abilities to work out of the box, learn new skills, and have an enjoyable experience making art at the Michener.

Informal, informative, and inspiring hands-on art classes with changing themes provide a unique focus for adult learners of all ages and abilities to engage in Museum-based art education and creative exploration. Permanent collections balanced with special exhibitions provide ongoing opportunities for looking at and learning about a variety of art forms. Opportunities for individualized instruction, observation, practice, experimentation, and the development of a personal style are at the core of all of our adult art classes. Instructional projects vary throughout the year; adults who participated in our art classes continue to bring new insights and find new challenges in this series of programs.

Adjunct faculty member Ashley Rutherford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in coordination with the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; a program that pairs PAFA’s renowned fine arts studio training with an Ivy League liberal arts education. She earned PAFA’s Violette De Mazia Scholarship in 2016, the 2015 Hal and Linda Robinson Book Award, and the 2015 Charles Toppan Curricular Prize. Her work has been selected for exhibitions in Philadelphia galleries including Seraphin Gallery and Spillway Collective. She maintains a rich historical connection to the Doylestown community through her family’s establishment, Rutherford’s Camera Shop, and provides the third generation in a lineage of contribution to Bucks County’s vibrant culture. Ashley has advanced experience in several art mediums and is eager to share her knowledge and passion for the arts and the Michener Art Museum with our community of learners. A recent Michener adult student enthusiastically commented, “Ashley is changing the way I look at art.”
