VIII. Later Military Works, 1895-1900
Trego’s later military works are not as well documented as
those done in the 1880s. We know that in the last half of the 1890s he devoted
more time to portraits, genre paintings, illustration work, and teaching as he
struggled with financial problems. However, he did continue to paint military subjects
until c. 1900 when his disappointment at not being permitted to exhibit
The Rescue
of the Colors caused him to give up on the genre completely. Circumstantial
evidence suggests that several of the works known only by fleeting references
or old photographs date from this period of time.
