V. Portraits, 1880-1904
While his father, Jonathan, was well known for his portraits,
William Trego did not turn to this genre until later in his career when he
needed a means of supplementing his income. While most of his formal portraits
seem to be of family and friends, there is likely a gap in our knowledge of his
portrait work. Photographs taken in his studio in
1893 and
1901 show sketches
on the walls and finished works standing in the corners that suggest a higher
volume of portraiture than is documented.
