Commentary

Delia Dexter (1827-1907) was an unmarried artist living with her sister's family in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and showing her work in Detroit, when she met Jonathan K. Trego around 1870. When they married in 1871, Delia became William Trego's step mother. She was a talented oil painter, and had at one time taught oil painting at Elmira College for Women in New York. William Trego formed a close bond with Delia and in later years many people were not aware that they were related only by marriage. Fluent in French, she was likely the source of William's knowledge of that language.
