Commentary

The work was very likely one of the many illustrations rendered by Trego in the years after 1900. It was inventoried by Cory Amsler, then curator of collections at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, during planning of the “Three Artists Named Trego” exhibit in 1992. (Trego exhibit files, curator’s office, Mercer Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania). Amsler describes it as showing a king gesturing to his court while a monk looked over his shoulder.

Provenance

Purchased by William Hallman of North Wales at a local sale in the late 1940s. It was in the possession of Hallman’s widow in 1992. Its location since then has not been determined.
