Oil on canvas, 26 x 34 inches
Titled, signed, and dated, lr: “Winter, Wm. T. Trego 1900”
The old man was posed by Reuben Schwager of North Wales. The family of the painting's owner remembers a story that Schwager was a night watchman and is returning home at dawn. The title, Trego’s signature, and the date are revealed as blades of dried
grass sticking up out of the snow at the lower right, an approach he had used once before, as part of his signature on The March to Valley Forge.
Purchased from the artist by Luther Dowlin
of North Wales, it has been passed down in the families of
his descendants to the current owner, Dowlin’s granddaughter.
The painting is in basically good condition, though
it has suffered a few minor paint losses and is in need of cleaning.
