Commentary
“Mattie” Dowlin was one of Trego’s closest friends in North Wales and the wife of his most ardent admirer and local patron, Luther Dowlin. She was an amateur artist herself and is known to have created several views of North Wales. Of all the portraits Trego did of the Dowlin family, this work is unique for its warmth and for the artist’s obvious desire to flatter the sitter, a sign of his high regard for her.Provenance
Commissioned by Luther Dowlin, husband of the subject. Upon the death of Martha Anders Dowlin, it passed to her granddaughter, Marie Waldron Inslee, whose children own it today.Condition
The painting is framed under glass, deteriorating, and in need of conservation work.< Profile Portrait of Martha Anders Dowlin, 1904 Portrait of Walter Emerson Baum, 1904 >
