Commentary
An 1884 Louisville exhibition catalog indicates that the painting was for sale at $250. Considering the price asked for the work compared to the other Trego work listed in the same catalog, it can be assumed that this was a much larger format work than Trego’s standard 24-by-30-inch canvas. The work was purchased by the noted American art collector Thomas B. Clarke. While it would seem from the exhibition record that it would have purchased in 1884, Barbara Weinberg indicates Clarke owned it by December 1883. (H. Barbara Weinberg, “Thomas B. Clarke: Foremost Patron of American Art from 1872 to 1899,” American Art Journal 8, no. 1 [May 1976], pp. 52–83) It is unknown exactly when Clarke disposed of it or what subsequently became of the painting.
