Cavalryman, n. d.

Vital Statistics

Pencil drawing on paper, mounted on cardboard, 20 x 7 inches
Inscribed on the reverse in ink: “W. T. Trego sketch of Civil War soldier inherited by W. E. Baum and donated to Bucks County Historical Society by Bert Baum 1961.”
Bucks County Historical Society/Mercer Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania

This small work is one of three images Trego created of a “melancholy soldier.” It is unknown whether all three were part of the same project or created separately for different reasons. The sad and passive images of the soldiers are unusual for an artist who usually tried to portray his military figures in vigorous action.

Obtained from the artist or his estate by Walter E. Baum, it passed to his son, Robert “Bert” Baum, who donated it to the Bucks County Historical Society/Mercer Museum in 1961.

Doylestown, 2010: “Three Centuries of Bucks County Art,” Elkins Gallery, Mercer Museum.

The drawing is fragile and in need of conservation
