William T. Trego: Catalogue Raisonne

Civil War Soldier, n.d.

Vital Statistics

Oil on canvas, oil sketch, Dimensions unknown
Current location unknown

The work is described in an inventory prepared by Charles LeKites of North Wales as an “oil sketch for mural,” but no further details are given. The Lewis family’s reference to the sketch by this term probably did not mean “mural” in the usual artistic sense but referred to a large painting.

The sketch was owned by members of the Lewis family of North Wales, descendants of William Lewis, one of Trego’s models for The Rescue of the Colors. It was last known to have been in the possession of Leon T. Lewis Sr., who died in 1967.
