Commentary
Although one owner of many years referred to it as a French scene, it is most likely one of the many genre works Trego did in his last years.
Provenance
The
painting was purchased for Helen Merrick Semple, a one-time friend of William
Trego, by her husband, the Reverend Samuel Semple. It passed to their son,
Samuel M. Semple, who died in 1968, and then to his widow, Prudence F. Semple,
who died in 1995. Thus far it has not been possible to trace the painting since
the death of Prudence F. Semple.
