Commentary

This small work is one of three images Trego created of a “melancholy soldier.” It is unknown whether all three were part of the same project or created separately for different reasons. The sad and passive images of the soldiers are unusual for an artist who usually tried to portray his military figures in vigorous action.

Provenance

Obtained from the artist or his estate by Walter E. Baum, it passed to his son, Robert “Bert” Baum, who donated it to the Bucks County Historical Society/Mercer Museum in 1961.

Exhibitions

The drawing is fragile and in need of conservation
