Commentary

Despite the fact that Eakins emphasized drawing from live models, this is the only surviving Trego sketch from his Academy days that appears to have been done in that way.

Provenance

The sketch is one of several rescued by Walter E. Baum from Trego’s studio after his death. It passed to Baum’s son, Robert “Bert” Baum, and from him to the current owner.

Condition

The paper is discolored and brittle
