The number and quality of entries for the Instagram #McCurryStreetChallenge are truly remarkable! After careful consideration of our Instagram feed, we have chosen our second winner! REMEMBER: there’s still one more chance to win before the exhibition Unguarded, Untold, Iconic: Afghanistan through the Lens of Steve McCurry closes on October 23rd.
The winning photograph is the image titled Girl in the Street July 2016 – Shanghai taken by photographer Florent Perreux (@florent_px_bnw). Curators were drawn to this black and white image for its simple yet strong composition and the mood it evokes – they could feel themselves on that street in Shanghai.
My Name is Florent Perreux. I live in Nantes on the northwest side of France, and I have been practicing photography for over 10 years. All of my work is on Instagram @florent_px_bnw or, in best quality, on my Tumblr: http://florent-px.tumblr.com/
I discovered photography from a lomography film, which inspired me to join a photo-club. I started working in digital photography in 2008 with a Canon DSLR, and today I shoot with an Olympus OMD and Rolleiflex for analog.
I have always been attracted by street photography and photojournalism. I used to watch lots of movies for inspiration. The photographers who inspire me most are Alex Webb, Vivian Maier, Brassai, and also Steve McCurry. There are many other photojournalists such as Eric Bouvet that I appreciate. I also love the work of Rupert Vandervell. Nowadays, the internet allows you to discover many talented photographers.
Photography has allowed me to meet some great people. The many trips I have taken inspire me a lot. I recently went to Asia and New York, and I really hope to return to the United States soon. I enjoy sharing my passion for travel with friends through my photography. I enjoy street photography. I love big cities, walking in the streets, people watching, and making new friends.
If I could travel anywhere with my camera, I think I would go to Tokyo. Japan is a country that fascinates me, with the lights and architecture. I like playing with the lights and shadows of the streets and taking spontaneous portraits.
Unguarded, Untold, Iconic: Afghanistan through the Lens of Steve McCurry will be on view through October 23, 2016. With just one more winning slot available, we encourage you to continue uploading awesome street images with the tags #McCurryStreetChallenge, #McCurryAfghanistan, and @MichenerArt!
