David Hayes was born in Hartford, Connecticut and studied art at the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University, where he was a student of the renowned American sculptor David Smith.

Hayes has had more than 300 exhibitions and is included in more than 100 collections including that of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Hayes's welded steel sculptures combine painted shapes cut from sheets of steel, and grow out of his fascination with physical gestures and organic forms.
